History
Today, the H. Upmann brand is an internationally known cigar brand because of the excellence in construction and pleasant blend of flavors.

But did you know? The famous H. Upmann brand name came from the word “Hermanos” - Spanish of the word “brother” wherein the first letter of the word is adapted. The “Upmann” came from the surname of the founder of the brand – thus the brand named “H. Upmann”

Birth of the H. Upmann brand
Herman Upmann is a German banker from Hamburg.  His family, owning a family-owned bank, sent him to Havana to set up a branch of their bank in the place. Aside from being a banker, this young man has deep passion for cigars. Upon starting out an office branch, he also diversified in the tobacco business. It was in 1844 when he invested in a cigar factory and tobacco leaves business aside from managing a bank. So in 1844, marks the establishment of the H. Upmann cigar brand.

Some credit the invention of cedar boxes used in packaging the Cuban cigars to Herman Upmann. The said boxes contain the cigar products of other manufacturers although it is labeled with the H. Upmann name. The boxes with the brand name are actually an advertising technique on the part of the company to make their factory operations known.

Through the later part of the 1800s, H. Upmann experienced success especially in international exhibitions. A proof of this is the seven gold medals the company won during some international Cuban cigars exhibitions. The said medals are integrated in the H. Upmann boxes together with the signature of Herman Upmann.

Various Acquisitions
The H. Upmann Bank and the H. Upmann cigar factory experienced bankruptcy that the cigar brand was sold to J. Frankau & Co. The cigars were produced by this British company until 1935.

There were negotiations between J. Frankau & Co. and Menéndez & García Co. regarding the selling of the H. Upmann brand and H. Upmann cigar factory which started in 1935. These negotiations were finalized in 1936. In 1937, Menéndez & García Co. already has the control of the H. Upmann cigar brand. H. Upmann cigar production continued until the end of the Cuban Revolution.

JFK and the H. Upmann cigars
Even with various acquisitions, the outstanding qualities of the H. Upmann cigars are well-known. In fact, the reigning president of the United States that time, President John F. Kennedy is a fan of the H. Upmann Petit Upmann. Actually, the night before the embargo between the United States and Cuba was signed, JFK sent his aide press secretary to gather all the H. Upmann Petit Upmann Cuban cigars available in all tobacco shops and merchants in Washington D.C.

End of the Revolution
When the Cuban Revolution ended and nationalization of the cigar industry was implemented, the Menéndez & García partnership have to move their H. Upmann cigar production in Canary Islands. Afterwards, they have moved the cigar production in the Dominican Republic which still continues today under the Altadis SA. Manufacturing of these cigars were primarily to cater to the American market.

H. Upmann Today
There are currently two versions of the H. Upmann brand: a version is made in Cuba for the Habanos SA which is a Cuban state-owned company while the other version is created in the Dominican Republic under the flagship of Altadis SA. Altadis SA made an excellent move by buying 50% of the chares of the Habanos SA thus giving them the right to make changes on the H. Upmann cigars lineup. Altadis then made some changes in the huge lineup of the H. Upmann – reorganizing them to remove the sizes which don’t really sell that mush in the market. With this action, there were around 30 vitolas which was removed from the H. Upmann cigar linueup.
In 2006, the company declared that the vast range of the H. Upmann lineup were reduced to seven handmade sizes and five machine-made sizes.

Contribution in the Cigar Industry
Various innovations were also contributed by H. Upmann: one is the use of cedar boxes while the other is the use of aluminum tubes. Cedars boxes is used in storing and transporting the cigars  which helps conserve and keep the cigars fresh with a well-maintained humidity. On the other hand, the aluminum tubes allow excellent preservation of the an individual cigar.

Distribution
The H. Upmann brand is now distributed and imported to various countries which imports Habanos cigars. Such countries would include Swiss, Great Britain, Mexico, Canada, Middle East, Africa, etc. In fact, this brand is so famous in Germany that these cigars were actually served using silver platters. But it is not only in this places that the H. Upmann cigar brand is known – in fact, this brand is recognized worldwide because of the excellence in construction while being made from only premium grade tobacco leaves. Aside from these, the brand is also known for its general strength which could range from mid to intense cigars.
