In 1935. Alonso Menendez has purchased a factory which manufactures the Particulares and the Byron cigar brands. After acquiring the Particulares factory, he created a new line of cigars – thus, the Montecristo cigar brand was born.
Brand Name Origin
The name of the cigar brand has an interesting story behind it. During the period, the radio was not yet invented, and there weren’t yet any portable means of entertainment like it. On the other hand, cigar rolling is a tedious job which requires skills. Since cigar rolling is a very important process in manufacturing cigars, factory owners can’t afford to let the torcederos or cigar rollers to get bored. Owners then hire lectors to read interesting news or stories to the cigar rollers to keep them entertained. A favorite novel among the torcederos is The Count of Monte Cristo. The cigar brand name was adapted from this novel, thus the name “Montecristo”.of the brand name was earlier makes the story a false one.
According to some, the original name of the brand was H. Upmann Montecristo Selection. But this isn’t true, because if we base it on the fact that the cigar brand was created in 1935 and the subsequent acquisition of the H. Upmann factory in 1937 – the fact that the establishment
The Montecristo Logo
The logo of the Montecristo was created by John Hunter Morris and Elkan Co. Ltd. which was a British distributor of the brand. The logo is quite simple with a fleur-de-lis surrounded by six swords forming a triangle shape around the emblem.
A New Partnership and Transfer of Production
A new partnership was formed when Alonso Menendez partnered with Pepe Garcia. With the initial success of the Montecristo cigar brand, they were able to purchase the H. Upmann factory from J. Frankau SA in 1937. They eventually transferred the production of the Montecristo cigars to the recently acquired factory. Manufacturing of the Montecristo cigars continued in the H. Upmann factory even after the Cuban Revolution ended.
Distributorships and Merger
J. Frankau SA was the only distributor of the Montecristo brand in UK while and John Hunter Morris and Elkan Co. Ltd is the distributor of the brand in Britain. These two distributors merged and became the Hunters & Frankau – the only distributor of the cigar brand in the UK.
Marketing and Success
The success of the Montecristo brand can also be attributed with effective marketing. In 1907, Alfred Dunhill opened a store featuring tobacco products like cigars and cigarettes. The cigar brand this company featured was the Montecristo cigar brand. Because of this effective marketing strategy from the said company, the Montecristo became a famous cigar brand. Up until now, the Montecristo cigar brand enjoys an excellent reputation and world-famous name.
The End of the Cuban Revolution
With the end of the Cuban Revolution and the rise of Fidel Castro into power, many changes were implemented in Cuba. One of these changes was the nationalization of all private and foreign-owned properties and that includes the cigar industry. All of the cigar brands were taken from their owners and became the property of the Cuban government.
Cubatabaco and Habanos SA
Because the government needs a formal organization to take care of all the affairs related to the management of the cigar brands, the Cubatabaco was formed in 1962. This is a state-owned company which was responsible in the production, marketing and distribution of all Cuban cigar brands. One of the cigar brand the Cubatabaco manages was the Montecristo. Meanwhile, an arm of the company was created in 1994 to take care of the distribution and importing of Cuban cigar brands like the Montecristo – and this is the Habanos SA.
Montecristo Cuban Cigars Lineup
The Classic lineup of the Montecristo Cuban cigars includes the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, Joyitas, Petit Tubos, Tubos, Petit Edmundo, Edmundo and Especial No. 2. Another series which was first released in 2009 was the Open Series which include the Regata, Master, Eagle and Junior. Being one of the topnotch brands, the Montecristo was allowed to release Limited Editions which include the Double Corona LE 2001, Robusto LE 2001, Montecristo C LE 2003, Montecristo D LE 2005, Robusto LE 2006, Sublime LE 2008, and the Grand Edmundo LE 2010.
Since all of the Cuban cigar brands including the Montecristo were taken over by the government, the partners Menendez and Garcia fled to the Canary Islands to re-establish the brand. They failed due to the trademark issues with the Cubatabaco. Eventually, they were able to reach the Dominican Republic where they were able to re-establish the cigar brand. They were able to sell their Montecristo products directly targeting the U.S. market without any trademark issues with Cubatabaco because of the trade embargo between U.S. against Cuba. The Montecristo brand is now owned by Altadis SA which continues the production of this other version of the Montecristo in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The tobacco leaves and other materials used in manufacturing the Dominican version of the Montecristo come from various regions including the Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and others.
Although the Montecristo Cuban cigars are very popular, the Monetcristo Dominican version has its own fair share of buyers featuring various cigar lineups.
